Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that only requires climbing shoes. The climber climbs up a short wall without a rope or harness and then falls or jumps onto crash pads (soft mats) on the ground. The walls are up to 16 feet at Main Street Boulders.
Rope climbing is a form of rock climbing where you climb high enough to need to tie into a rope with a harness and have a belayer (someone to catch you with the rope and lower you). Main Street Boulders is an indoor bouldering facility located in the heart of Sunny Side in central Flagstaff and Flagstaff Climbing is an indoor climbing facility and climbing gear retail shop located in historic downtown Flagstaff a few blocks north of the university.
Long before Main Street Boulders was born, Flagstaff Climbing opened their doors in September 1995 (as Vertical Relief Climbing Center). Founded by two local climbers Stan Mish and Tomas Robison and with the help of a great crew the gym quickly became a staple for Northern Arizona climbers. Flagstaff climbers enjoy great year-round climbing but many soon realized the benefits of having an indoor facility to improve their climbing. Area children received a great opportunity to learn a new activity that challenges them mentally and physically.
In 2003, long time employee, John Doskicz acquired the business and continued to push onward serving the ever-growing community.
In 2012, Vertical Relief Climbing Center changed its name to the new and current name; Flagstaff Climbing.
In 2013, Flagstaff Climbing added a new bouldering gym, Main Street Boulders located on Main Street in the heart of Sunny Side in central Flagstaff. MSB’s walls are sculpted by the leading wall building company, Vertical Solutions and is a true work of art. With the addition of MSB, Flagstaff Climbing could now offer two climbing gyms for the price of one.
In 2019, John’s long time operations manager Jason Henrie bought the business. Jason looks to continue building upon a community and gym experience that stands on a strong and broad foundation, laid down by amazing owners, employees and customers over the last three decades.
Main Street Boulders and Flagstaff Climbing thanks everyone who has ever worked at, climbed with and supported our climbing gyms. Your continued support has made a positive difference in many people’s lives. Come on down and check out your friendly neighborhood bouldering gym, rock gym and gear shop!
